This week volunteers will be visiting Capitol offices to hand out the coalition list!
Too many officers and civilians have died in interactions that did not need to be deadly. Every one of these deaths is a tragedy. We naturally respond with grief and outrage, but we must also respond with analysis and reform. Why did it happen, and how can we prevent it from happening again.
HB 2044 by Chairwoman Senfronia Thompson is a serious effort to do just that. It limits the authorization for deadly force to the prevention of harm to self or others, and it creates a fair and equitable system of discipline for officers based on national best practices. It closes loopholes that prevent chiefs from applying discipline, and improves public reporting.
